in this episode, I want to talk about how you can expand your vocabulary in an easy way.
Easy way might not be a precice describtion. let’s better say in a way where you can improve in other fields as well – you’ll get informed while learning vocabulary.

Well quite frankly, I haven’t finished with my reasearched about that method. I am still figuring out if this really works. the idea is, that on a later stage I will adopt the episode and give more detailed information how it turned out in the end.
That’s the reason why I did not numbered this episode yet.

My name is Daniel Goodson and this is my fluent podcast.
Learn from and with a language learner.

Of course, there are a ton of different ways to make vocabulary stick. I’have already covered this topic several times on my fluent podcast or partly mentioned different vocab retention methods on previous episodes. For instance on episode 17 different language learners eplained their ways of learning vocab (E17).
Well of course, finally we are all word lover in a way. That’s why you switched on.

The way I wanna learn vocabulay right know and I wanna explain in more detail to you is this… Well honestly it’s no rocket science.
You can learn vocabulary by reading news artcles. Not only reading about one event that is….but by focusing on similar News.

So if you want to enlarge your vocabulary inventory in a specific area, you could just pick a topic in the news.

let’s say you wanna become more experienced in the medical field or health field or beter let’s put it this way if you want to get better. So it doesn’t really matter if it’s in the context of learning a target language or just being specialisted and well prepared when speaking in your mother tongue.

A topic which you are sure it will come up again and again in near future…for instance the coronavirus.

What I did:

I read the article once very quickly (by the way i’ll put the link on the show notes of myfuentpodcast.com)

Then if there is any chunks of words you want to be able to remember jot tmem down.

I wrote them in my so called evernote. It’s basically a notebook. In addition to that, the old good pen and paper would be even better. shame on you Daniel goodson. Nobody is perfect.

Well anyways…

On one hand i will pick vocab I think they will come up in other articles

“lockdown measures”

Even though already get the gist of the meaning thanks to the context.

I don’t just want to know the word passively. The goals should be to get it to the akctive Vocabulary, which i would be able to use in an active way.

“virus first emerged”

“Wuhan, Hubei’s capital of 11 million people where the virus first emerged, has no trains or planes in or out.”

“At least five other provincial cities are seeing clampdowns on transport.”

You can look it up on an mobile phone app. I looked it up on the merriam-Webster app. It’s a monolignauge dictionary.

Speaking of merriam-webster. I am currently trying to make a video review anbout merriam-webster. I will put it on youtube and on my website very sooon.

I finally did it! I can hardly believe it myself. I know. Check it out on myfluentpodcast on the video section.

“How do you quarantine a city – and does it work?”

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-51217455

After that I recommend you to let a little bit of time pass. then spot for any similar articles and work on the new text as well
*

You can basically see it as a type of spaced repetition system. You know like a flashcard system. I’m sure you’ve already heard about that term.

The goal is or my intention is… to come across similar word…similar chunk of words again and again but always under the condition, that you stay engaged and motivated.

Of course, you could just leave the part where you are meant to jottung all the thihgs down and just read and look up for specific words and just go on and on. Just enjoy the

A tip: So pick your topic wisely. You know what, let me rethink that.

Frankly said, it works with any material. It doesn?t necassary need to be a news article. It could be a specific blog about Movies, games, animals, trains,

For even better results, find a tandem partner, wich whom you can discuss the articles.I haven’t done that. Shame on me. By sharing your thoughs you will make the vocabuly stick better.

The more methods you will use, the the better it will stick.

To wrap this episode up

I first chose a more or less specific topic.
Then triedjto find articles
Read the article quickly
I listened to a few youtube videos.
I wrote the meanings and example down on a vocabulary app.
I safed all my researches on the app.

In the end, it all comes down to focuseing. finally, hard work will pay off. That is for sure.
