Hallo language enthusiasts! The last episode of my podcast was kind of an introduction to this themed series called learning through TV series and movies. In fact, the benefits of studying TV series and movies are countless. It is crucial to organize your language studies beforehand and it is recommended to combine different learning methods as well. I used to watch series in English or let’s say I’ve built this habit over the last three years meaning I don’t watch movies
00:00:37
or TV series in my mother tongue anymore. But before I start this episode just let me have a quick note. I’ve mentioned that in an earlier episode of my fluent podcast before even if I’m not a native English speaker I don’t want to make too many grammar errors. I will publish this episode as I transcribe it beforehand without having it revised by somebody else in the first place. But it’s very important to me the quality of my humble podcast increases steadily
00:01:18
and that’s why I WILL HAVE THIS EPISODE revised by somebody else in the second step and I will then republish the episode some weeks later and I will compare both versions of the episode. So now let’s get started. In this episode I want to have a closer look at Netflix. I want to show you how you could use that flick as a tool to learn languages. I wanted you to become aware of the vast possibilities that Netflix brings.
00:01:59
I don’t have a traditional cable TV nor have I satelite TV. The only way I can watch TV or movies is through internet as you can imagine.
00:02:11
I was really amazed as I heard the first time Netflix would be available in my country that was in about September 2014. Well, anyways. Netflix is a global provider of streaming movies and TV series Netflix is a global provider of streaming movies and TV series in order to access to Netflix. You have to subscribe and there are plenty of series and movies which are available with several audio lines and subtitles in different languages to choose from. Bear in plenty of series and movies which are available with several audio lines and subtitles. in different languages to choose from. Bear in mind depending on from which country you are watching netflix there are different

series and movies available. The space Netflix catalog for example is changing regularly. And now let’s have a look at the Series daredevil. By the way I’ve switched my language default settings to English and they watched Netflix from Switzerland so I have the audio in English French German Italian and “English description” and I will explain in a few minutes what English description is so after I’ve changed my language settings to Spanish, Spanish can be chosen now and same for Portuguese.
00:03:29
now and same for Portuguese. But as I put the Netherlands in my settings that didn’t work out but at least you could choose subtitles in Dutch. Netflix started out with the order description project with the TV series Marvel’s Daredevil which is actually one of my favorite series. Now let’s see what all your description exactly is. You can enable all audio narration just like choosing subtitles and
00:04:10
alternate audio and audio description is an optional moderation that describes what is happening on screen including physical actions facial expressions, costume settings and scene changes. Actually it was established for individuals who are blind. But you as a language learner can use it to learn even more vocabulary while watching movies or TV series on Netflix it will give you an extra boost but it is only recommended for advanced
00:04:49
learners. And needless to say here the additional audio description doesn’t come with subtitles. learners. And needless to say here the addition description doesn’t come with subtitles. For instance all your descriptive narration could say sentences like. “He glanced at the building entrance or she rolls her eyes and so on” and with the help of all description you’ll quickly learn new descriptive wordsd epending on your current language level. This will definitely give you an extra description you’ll quickly learn new descriptive wordsd epending on your current language level. This will definitely give you an extra
00:05:28
boost especially because a lot of descriptive vocabulary will be repeatedly mentioned. And the more the same or similar work chuncks come up the better you can learn it kind of automatically by hearing it several times and once you’ve learned enough words you can disable description audio. In my view you learn best when using audio and subtitles both in your target language but the possibilities are in fact countless. There’s no right or false and everybody has a different learning style. Just
00:06:10
try and find out what suits you the best. For example, you could watch your favorite TV series or in this case probably better you could watch your favorite movie. Often we can quote phrases by heart because we watched our favorite movies several times and this will make it easier for you and you will learn better or faster. So that’s it guys for this week’s episode and at the end I will blend in the theme song from Daredevil with the description audio on.
